I take a personalised approach to counselling and psychotherapy in Woking, Borough, and online. My work always starts with a full assessment that looks at the history of your mental health, your current feelings, and what you wish to get out of our sessions together. We will then draw up a bespoke roadmap towards reaching a better place, using different modalities such as psychoanalytic therapy or EMDR, depending on what best suits you.

I trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy at The Guild of Psychotherapists in 2009 and use this way of working with many clients. We will explore unconscious thoughts and feelings, exploring aspects of our relationship as therapist and client to gain a better understanding of underlying emotional conflicts, defensive processes that obstruct emotional awareness, and use what we uncover to identify issues related to sense of self and self-esteem, among other issues you may be facing. Normally I see clients once a week, but I can up the frequency to three times a week if needed.
This is a short-term therapy for depression and anxiety that starts with us building a map of your interpersonal world and identifying repeated thought patterns that cause the difficulties you are facing. We will then work closely with these areas of difficulty, looking at how we can change your thinking for the better whilst being mindful of the inevitable resistance to change. Over the course of a few sessions, our goal will be to engage with how you process thoughts about yourself and change these patterns for the better, using our relationship as therapist and client to foster deeper understanding.
EMDR is an established, proven technique that is particularly effective for addressing issues grounded in trauma – both one-off incidents and trauma linked to early experiences. The practice involves moving my fingers back and forth in front of your face as we walk through a traumatic event, which reconnects you in a safe, guided way to the images, thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations associated with that trauma. In the process, we will ‘unhook’ the pain linked to this trauma and help you process it as a normal memory.
Mentalization based therapy is essentially a process of “thinking about thinking”. In many cases, particularly those with personality disorders, people can struggle to understand their own thoughts and emotions, leading to depression, anxiety, or anger. Our work will involve working to understand your mental state and that of other people, and how this influences your behaviour. By stabilising how your emotions are processed and expressed in a therapeutic context, we can gain an understanding of how your mind works and allow you to process emotions in a healthier way as you move forward in life.
